I'm a bit late on posting this, but I hit 50K on Monday. I just verified my win yesterday. It was a bit strange, because the past two years always saw me rushing to scrape by the 50K mark on November 30th. This month feels like it went by very fast. It could be the fact that I'm technically already 'done' earlier or it could be that I never went to any of the write-outs, didn't have any human interaction with other fellow NaNoers, I just wrote when I could and that was that. I think a big part of it was also that I had no plan. I wrote a load of crap. Which isn't to say I didn't write a bunch of garbage in the past two years, but I had plot and characters and idea that are salvageable with some vigorous editing. Not this year's NaNo. I didn't have a story, just a fledgling idea and four characters but nothing novel-worthy. As soon as I got to 50K, I decided to switch tracks and working on The Carving. When November is over, I'm going to go back to the notebook and keep handwriting the story, but I'll use what I wrote in my NaNo as a reference point. I'm still going to push for 75K, even though I'm only at 57K today. That means I have to write 4K a day...can I do it? We shall see!
